About
Statement
My art reflects my understanding of our complex past, honoring the beauty that American artists have been historically drawn to. My sculptures are generally made from wood locally gathered, not bought or gained through destroying trees, and reflect the environment in which they are found. Wood is my preferred medium because of the spirit it exudes in its grain, its texture, and the subtlety. Furthermore, wood is a durable yet delicate substance requiring skill and precision, qualities I admire and seek to exude as an artist and individual. For me, the meticulous planning and execution woodworking requires represents the human responsibility toward maintaining the environment and its facets, regardless of popularly perceived significance. In my painting, I have explored color-field painting and other abstract methods and theories, however my current interests are geared towards representational paintings of nostalgic spaces from my past.
Biography
Torrin Rasmussen grew up in the American West cherishing the countless family excursions to state and national parks, and summers at her grandparents' horse ranch. Furthermore, these wonderful experiences in her formative years fostered a deep love of the Western landscape, but also a profound appreciation for the culture and legacy of the American West. During her undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University, in which she received her Bachelor’s of Fine Art and minors in both art history and creative writing, her courses articulated the emotional connection she had felt towards these environments, but they also contextualized the history of her nostalgia. Her art mirrors her passion for the American West and its legacy through passionate landscape paintings, non-subjective abstract paintings, graphite wildlife illustrations, and abstract wood sculptures. She currently resides in Utah with her two orange cats.
